Ever observed a funny sticker on the bumper of a car.. boasting 'This Car Climbed Mount Washington'... where in the actual car which did the daunting climb in all probability might be a rental. It never failed to amuse me... and always brought a smile on my face... until.. the eventful night.
This is how it all happened..
It was my turn to cook and as always found at the last minute that we were out of supplies. It was freezing cold (Just 6 degrees C..but for someone who has spent most part of my life in hot and humid climate and winter meant 20 degrees c ..tats bone crushing cold :) )
Pulled out my woollens and muffler, leather gloves and few other things on me which made me look like a gunny bag and could hardly recognize myself only to realize how tough it is to pull out a keychain from your pocket when you are dressed like an eskimo. Trying to fit in to the drivers seat was a task in itself. Few passers by gave me alook as to "what s this guy trying to do? Isnt Halloween over yet??" Seat belt Check, mirror check, foot on brake pedal Check, lights on Check, still felt something was missing..... Yiikess my license and my wallet. Wondered If I should risk driving with out them.. but common sense prevailed.. after all its Murphy's Home country...keys.. door.. wallet..keys for the car.. squeezing in to the car and all set again..ready to go...seat belt check, mirror check, foot on brake pedal check, lights on and on my way..vroom
"Dil ko tumse pyaar hua Pehli baar hua.. Tumse Pyaar hua" no thats not the cd player.. its my cell ringing. My roomies missed the last bus home and wanted a ride. Picked my roomies and on my way again.. It started raining a bit and visibility was low.. not to dampen the spirits we started playing some music in the car. My new roomie who is just from India recently acquired a I phone and is totally obsessed with it.. that he literally clings on to it 24X7 and the car was no exception. Pumping the volume high took on the route to the Asian groceries store.
Missed a left turn on the way.. and had to take a u turn.
There was a car ahead of me driving so fast that even my granny would have overtaken even with out her car... :) Luckily I had to take a left and the car ahead went straight..I pushed the gas a bit...One of my all time favourite routes to the store was, the Spruce Broook Rd which had a narrow road and required special control to maneuver the car around the corners...It always gave me a kick to drive here... It was surrounded by huge trees and wooden cable carrying poles very close to the road.
I tried to do a Schumi..
"Lose control.." the song in the cd player... ironic and apt for the moment... lost control of the vehicle and hit the pavement... making the car jump in to the air......
(..to be continued)
